Everything for our How Two: Coloring Book SVGs series all in one convenient place!

This is our How Two video series on transforming simple black & white images like coloring book pictures in to a layered SVG image to use as a cut file for your electronic cutting system such as the Cricut Explore or Silhouette Cameo. We use the free applications Inkscape and GIMP that are available for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X.

Here you will find a playlist of all the videos, all the How Two reference sheets, and all the extra files we shared for this series.

YouTube Playlist

This is the playlist of off of the videos in the series in our recommended viewing order. As we made the series we answered a few questions or showed techniques that might be more helpful at the beginning.  This playlist takes this in to account and has them in an order that might be more helpful.

How Two Reference Sheets

Most of the videos in our series have a How Two reference sheets you can download or read on your computer. This can make it easier to follow along with the videos, and they are handy reference sheets when you’re working on an image.

These How Twos are PDF files. If you cannot view the files, you can get the free Adobe Reader.

Additional Files

These archive have some of the files we worked with in the videos so you can try following along with the same images.

Software Applications

Only download applications from their official sites! Other sites may not have your best interests at heart. These applications are freely distributed products, you should never have to buy them to use them. Both sites can be quite slow at times, so be patient.

  • Get Inkscape at: http://inkscape.org – The ‘Downloads’ menu will let you choose Windows or Mac OS X.
    • Windows users will want to choose the ‘Installer’ link.
    • Mac users, there is a bit more work to install Inkscape. To get the Inkscape installer click on the Mountain icon with the green down arrow. Their page also has instructions on how to download and install additional software required to run Inkscape.
  • Get GIMP at: http://www.gimp.org – The ‘Downloads’ link will take you to automatically to the Windows or Mac OS X installers depending on what you are using. We recommend using the link …”from gimp.org”

These are the free software we used in our videos because anyone can get it to use. If you have Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, or other applications you are comfortable with which do similar things you are more than welcome to use those. The terms may not be exactly the same, but the concepts can still be applied in other applications with the same tools.

Expectations and Encouragement

Having heard from a lot of viewers on this series we just wanted to take a moment to share a  few things.

This process works well with simple Black & White drawings, this is why it is the Coloring Book SVG series.

Black & White images with a lot of detail or open shapes can be done, but you will need to be comfortable with Inkscape, have a really good understanding of the techniques we have shown, and have a good chunk of time to do your work. You may want to look at detailed images and think like the crafter you are to see ways you could simplify the image before making an SVG. We talk about this with some examples in our post in response to a discussion on Facebook.

Color or grayscale images are a whole other set of techniques and skills that we haven’t offered yet in a series.

I know we all want things quick and simple, but don’t get discouraged when it doesn’t work out right away! It takes time to learn and practice. We have had a lot of feedback from people who thought this was too much and they couldn’t do it, only to stick with it and proudly share their results. You can do it too!
